Associate Fellowship (AFMIA™)

 

Associate Fellowship (AFMIA™) recognises members who have demonstrated significant commitment and contribution to the migration advice sector and to the professional and ethical standards of the Migration Institute of Australia (MIA).

AFMIA™ acknowledges respected practitioners who actively contribute to advancing professional standards, ethical practice, knowledge-sharing, mentoring, and the ongoing development of the migration advice community.

Members awarded Associate Fellowship may use the AFMIA™ post‑nominal in recognition of their professional standing and contribution to the field.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for Association Fellowship, applicants must:

  • Have been an MIA member for at least five (5) years within the seven (7) years immediately preceding the date of application;
  • Have practiced in the migration advice profession for five (5) or more years;
  • Have actively contributed to promoting and advancing knowledge, professionalism and ethical practice within the migration profession over at least the past three (3) years;
  • Be supported by two (2) written recommendations from Associate Fellows, Fellows or Life Members of the MIA to whom the applicant is personally known; and
  • Demonstrate high ethical standards, professional standing, and a respected reputation within the MIA and/or migration advice sector.

Selection Criteria

Applications for Associate Fellowship are assessed against the following criteria:

  • Sustained Contribution to the MIA
    Demonstrated ongoing contribution and engagement with the MIA over a reasonable period.

  • Knowledge Development and Sharing
    Contribution to the development, sharing, and promotion of knowledge within the migration advice profession, particularly among MIA members.

  • Leadership and Professional Engagement
    Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, advocacy, professional participation, or service within the migration profession..

  • Advancement of the Profession
    Meaningful contribution to advancing the migration profession and upholding the values, integrity, and professional standards of the MIA.

Application Process

To apply for Associate Fellowship:

  1. Review the eligibility and selection criteria.
  2. Download and complete the application form here.
  3. Email your completed application to [email protected] by Sunday, 19 July 2026.

Submissions received after this date will not be considered for presentation at the Gala Dinner & Awards Night held at the National Migration Conference.

Assessment Process

  1. Applications are reviewed and assessed against the eligibility and selection criteria by an assessment panel.
  2. Recommendations are then submitted to the MIA Board for consideration and resolution.
  3. Applicants will be notified of the outcome following the completion of the assessment process.
